After a roller-coaster ride across the Atlantic (WHEE!!! Wait…how many more hours of this??? Umm.. whee…?) we landed in Lyon, a day ahead of our river cruise along the Soane and Rhone rivers. In a desperate attempt to acclimate to the local time zone, we zombied around town til an appropriate bed time – (6PM) after devouring two cauldrons of moules (mussels) at a sidewalk cafe (with frites, of course!) and watching the locals try to avoid both the rain and eye contact.

After 13 refreshing hours of shut-eye, we attacked Lyon anew, finally aware enough to appreciate the ancient Jesuit college that was our hotel. The Jesuits are gone, (we think), but the tiny circular stone stairways and shadowed loggia remain. Very atmospheric but not photo friendly. You’ll just have to trust me.
We climbed Fourviere hill to the cathedral. (Huffing and puffing – but in French)
We peeked at the Museum of Miniatures.

We checked out the two Roman amphitheaters.
And, finally, we boarded the ship at the dock in Lyon. And two days later, here we remain. Turns out, recent torrential rains caused high rivers, so the ship can’t fit under the bridges. So far, we’ve seen a lot of Lyon and the Soane River. Fingers crossed, we’ll be heading downstream tonight.
Well, THAT’S a drag. However we’ll still look forward to your posts. Did the miniatures look like rooms in the little village in England (something on Burton – can’t remember . . .)?
You mean that world class Model Village in Bourton-on-the-Water?? Ummm…. No. These were nice!
Hi Elaine and Roger!!!
Enjoy your trip!! I look forward to reading your blog!!
You should limit the number of photos with Roger in them for obvious reasons.
Best,
Senior Judge
Sorry, Mike, I have no control. His contract calls for a minimum of 2 appearances per blog posting. I should have hired a lawyer.
Well at least you were stranded in a place that has wonderful food and you were able to get lots of exercise.
Only gone a few days and already having fun-ny adventures. Looking forward to seeing the sights along the river.
Eat more frites. It’ll put more weight on the boat and you’ll be able to slip under the bridges with ease. And if you’re desperate, pull more moules right from the river. That will cause the water to go down. See, sometimes you have to improvise when you travel.
You are SO resourceful, John! It’s no wonder you’re the Grand Poobah at Gartner!
By the way, how many motorcycles did Roger bring on the boat with him?
goofy glasses are always a sign of a good guy!
Hi Elaine, Good to hear from you! We plan to float the Danube in September and bike every day up into the hills. Hope the weather get better. Hugs, Karen
Karen, if you’re doing the same (or similar) trip to the one we did two years ago – it was divine!! Great to hear from you. Hi to Dave!
Love to hear about your adventures!
Will love “following” you!
Laincharella Goes to France !!! That sounds like a Muppet Movie !! Be nice to Roger… Have a Great Adventure !!!
So jealous!
Ducatis fit under every bridge
Hi Guys, what a shame to be stranded. Hope the rivers behave themselves soon for you. Looking forward to more updates. Love Yvonne xx
